Koh- passed it many times but never went in. Saturday dinner was finally taking place inside. First impressions- not bad! Think Mr.C was a bit worried it would be Saba take 2! (Bad meal in Saba, food wasn't top notch and atmosphere was a nightmare). I think when it's just the two of you going out for a meal you're not looking for something that's full of girls at hen parties sipping cocktails! Pretty much what was on offer at the Saba doors. Our table reservation was made for the lounge area- the restaurant had been booked out. The lounge had a nightclub feel to it- it was dark and loud and would have been perfect place to start a girlie night out. Luckily the God of Food was looking down on us that night and someone had cancelled their table in the restaurant. We were seated pretty much straight away. Tables were pretty close beside each other but we didn't have to ears drop on the table beside us till pretty much when we were eating our main course when the came!
I had already done my research on MenuPages so I had a fair idea of what I was going for. I opted for the king scallops as starters and Thai green beef curry for mains. Mr.C went for the Vietnamese beef balls and a Chiang Mai for the brave- 'for the brave'- fire fire, my mouths on fire !! Feeling hot hot hot!! We had to order prawn crackers- they don't come free like in Chinese restaurants but they do come with a sweet chili dip as a consolation to having to pay for them!
The scallops were ok, average, wouldn't be overly excited about getting them again. Maybe because I'm not a fan of raw fish/meat, I like to have things hot, I found the scallops to be a bit 'room temperature' in the middle. Didn't think the green sauce type thing complimented it at all, tasted like a sour tang of something! Mr.C's Vietnamese beef balls were pretty much just normal beef balls in a red curry broth. The red curry broth was lovely and spicy but the beef balls, nothing special. Oh and they forgot to give us our expensive 3 euro prawn crackers! We got them after finishing our starters! tut tut. For 3 euro, I was expecting a few real prawns on the plate! :P
Onto main courses..
I really enjoyed my Thai green beef curry. It has some aubergines and fine green beans in it. The curry itself was nice and spicy, was actually very spicy! Found the rice to be a bit hard though compared to the way I would cook it at home, but I still ate it all! There was plenty of beef in the actual main, a bit too much to finish. Mr.C's Chiang Mai was one word, make it two, fecking spicy!! So hot I was only able to eat one string of noodle and then down some of my lovely Koh Samui drink. There was some kai lan in the noodles, it was very nice! It wasn't like the ones we get in the Chinese supermarkets, it was like baby baby kai lan and was so tasty if you can stand chili heat. Both mains are something we'd both definitely get again.
And for desserts, bad choice by me I have to admit :( Very bad. I ordered the special dessert of the day- passion fruit and mango souffle. It was yucky yucky yucky. I'd have to give it no points! Ireland did better in the Eurovision than it did. It sounded very exciting and yummy, but when it came and a spoon went in it was like ok I don't like this. I think I was expecting the souffle to be warm and cooked when I got it, but it wasn't :( It was cold and when the spoon went right down into the bottom of the ramekin there was some water, like the pudding itself was melted.. Yucky. I had to be brave and try spoon it in, and I did try very hard! It just wasn't nice, simply as that. I think I've discovered that I don't think I like passion fruit :) Hard soury pippy things folded in through the dessert and with every bite, you had that sour pippy! The mango coulis which outlined the ramekin was nice though! Don't like cold souffles! Worst thing was, well for Mr.C anyway, we decided to share a dessert, and ha well let's just say he didn't get his selection of ice creams and he didn't like my choice either!
